Yamaha had 'a really positive weekend' in Malaysia despite early engine issues

Gold and Goose

After a difficult 2024 season, both Monster Energy Yamaha riders claimed their best results of the year in Malaysia.

It is no secret that Yamaha has struggled throughout the 2024 MotoGP World Championship. However, the recent flyaway rounds have provided solid results for the Japanese manufacturer.

Last weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix, which marks the end of the flyaways, saw both Yamaha riders claim their best results of the 2024 MotoGP season.

The 2021 MotoGP World Champion, Fabio Quartararo, finished the Sprint in fifth and the Grand Prix in sixth. After the race weekend, the Frenchman was hopeful that this newfound form would continue to the final round of the season.

"I think that it was a really positive weekend," Quartararo stated. "We have had great Qualifyings and great races. So, I think that we are in a good way. Hopefully, we can now make a step into the last round."

Alex Rins' first year with Yamaha has been a disaster as the Spaniard has only scored points eight times. However, at the Malaysian Grand Prix, he claimed his best result of eighth place and could battle with the riders around him.

"This was my best result so far with Yamaha," Rins explained. "I am quite happy with the work that we are doing. It looks like since yesterday (Saturday) we made a step forward, in terms of electronics and stopping the bike. I am quite happy, again we did our 100% and we had nice battles with Maverick (Vinales). I was able to study him and see where he was going and not going.

"There is still one more race, unfortunately, at this moment Valencia is having a really bad time, so we will race for them in Montmelo. The small positive part of this is that we really struggled in Montmelo in June, so let's see how our bike works there and if we have improved."
