Michael Dunlop continued to re-write the record books at this year’s Isle of Man TT Races with victory on his MD Racing Yamaha in Thursday afternoon’s second Supersport race accompanied by the first ever 130mph lap in the class.
A final lap of 130.403mph not only helped him beat the K2 Trooper Beer Triumph of Peter Hickman by 9.6s but also saw him chalk up his fourth win of the week – the third time he’s achieved such a feat – and move on to a career total of 25 wins, just one shy of the record tally held by Joey Dunlop, his illustrious uncle.
“That was sound,” he said afterwards, “but I knew I had to ride the Yamaha to its full ability. The Triumph has more cc’s and more power and my tyres were moving around a bit but the wee bike was mint.”
“The bike hasn’t changed in years so to build something in my own workshop and do 130mph is amazing. We’ve built a fantastic bike. I built up a comfortable lead and I was trying to manage it but Pete closed in, so I had another go and upped the pace; I knew I had a 130 in me.”
“I’ve a good record around here on the 600 (it was Dunlop’s 11th win in the class) so I just tried to batter on and get the job done. The track was perfect, everything around me was perfect and it’s probably the best conditions we’ve ever had at the TT.”
Dunlop still has three more bites of the cherry to equal and/or beat Joey’s record haul with Friday’s Superstock and Supertwin races and the closing Blue Riband Senior still to come. In the form he’s in, few would bet against him.
