Nicolo Bulega's decision to run intermediate tyres in the Superpole Race was his undoing at the Balaton Park Circuit.
The Hungarian World Superbike Round was a disaster for Championship challenger, Nicolo Bulega. The factory Ducati rider arrived at Balaton Park four points behind Toprak Razgatlioglu, and left 26 points behind.
Razgatlioglu was able to open up a large lead over Bulega in the Championship standings after the Italian opted to use intermediate tyres in the Superpole Race.
This decision would become his undoing as he finished the race outside of the points in 13th, with Razgatlioglu claiming all 12 after winning.
"Honestly, it has been a difficult weekend, especially in the Superpole Race," Bulega told WorldSBK.com.
"We started badly on Friday because I had zero feeling with my bike, then we improved on Saturday for Race One.
"But in the Superpole Race in the tricky conditions, it was not my best race. I did not do very well in those conditions, so I have to improve. I had zero feeling.
"Then in Race Two, I was very focused, and I tried to recover some positions."
Bulega was questioned after the weekend about his tyre choice for the Superpole Race, to which he admitted it was his mistake as he expected the track to be wetter.
"I did a mistake with the choice of the tyre," he admitted about his intermediate tyre choice for the Superpole Race.
"I was quite sure that it was not going to be fully dry, so I decided to put in the intermediate tyres, but I made a mistake.
"Honestly, I don't know what to say. I will just try to improve for the next races."
However, he was able to end his weekend on a more positive note, as in the dry conditions in Race Two, he carved through the field and finished in second.
"After the Superpole Race, I was very focused on recovering from my bad mistake in the Superpole Race," he explained.
"I tried to start well, I did some overtakes, and I got to P2 and tried to do my pace. It was eventually enough for P2."
