WorldSBK Misano, Race 2: Bulega Caught, Passed, Dropped by Razgatlioglu

Gold and Goose

The fourth round of the 2024 WorldSBK Championship, the Emilia-Romagna Round, takes place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Toprak Razgatlioglu set pole position in Superpole, and converted that to a victory in both Race 1 and the Superpole Race, before securing the treble in Race 2.

Race 2

Toprak Razgatlioglu secured a dominant treble in Misano as he caught, passed, and gapped Nicolo Bulega in WorldSBK Race 2.

The Turkish rider made a sluggish start from the pole position he earned by winning the Superpole Race, dropping to fifth. As he made his way through on Andrea Locatelli at turns nine and 10 on the first lap, Andrea Iannone ran wide, and he made two positions. Another pass on Alex Lowes at turn 14 meant he ended the first lap in second place, but already over a second down on Bulega.

Bulega then extended his advantage to 1.5 seconds over the next few laps, but by lap eight the advantage was erased and Razgatlioglu took the lead at turn eight.

It was game over at that point. Razgatlioglu extended his lead as far as five seconds, before rolling the pace off on the final lap to allow Bulega back within three. It was Razgatlioglu's second treble, his fourth win in succession, and his sixth win in the last nine races.

Bulega secured second place, four seconds clear of Alvaro Bautista in third. Bautista ran fourth for much of the race but made pass on Alex Lowes to secure the final podium spot.

Lowes himself took fourth, ahead of Andrea Locatelli, while Danilo Petrucci rounded out the top six thanks to a late pass on Axel Bassani, who finished seventh. Remy Gardner, Iker Lecuona, and Jonathan Rea completed the top 10.

Superpole Race

Toprak Razgatlioglu, 2024 Emilia-Romagna WorldSBK. Credit: Gold and Goose.

Toprak Razgatlioglu took his second race win of the WorldSBK Emilia-Romagna Round in the Superpole Race at Misano, after Alvaro Bautista crashed out of fourth place.

Razgatlioglu made the holeshot, but lost the lead at turn 14 on the first lap to Nicolo Bulega. The Italian hung on for a few laps, but had nothing to respond to Razgatlioglu with when the Turkish rider made his way through and into the lead at turn eight on lap four.

Razgatlioglu then extended his lead to over a second, and went unchallenged to the flag, extending the championship lead he took over yesterday. Bulega hung on to second place, while Alex Lowes took third.

Lowes was perhaps going to come under pressure from Alvaro Bautista late on in the race, but the Spaniard crashed at turn 10 on lap five which ended his hopes even of points. Bautista remounted, but only got to 17th.

Behind Lowes, in the end, was Andrea Locatelli, while Andrea Iannone and Axel Bassani made it an Italian 4-5-6. Iker Lecuona put in a solid performance on the Honda for seventh place, ahead of Jonathan Rea in eighth, and Danilo Petrucci who took the final point in ninth. Dominique Aegerter rounded out the top 10.

Race 1

Toprak Razgatlioglu dominantly won WorldSBK Race 1 in Misano. He took the lead on lap five, after Remy Gardner had led early having made the holeshot from third on the grid.

After passing Gardner, Razgatlioglu went unchallenged to the flag. Both factory Ducati riders, Alvaro Bautista and Nicolo Bulega, were able to swiftly find their respective ways past Gardner, too, but neither had the pace to catch Razgatlioglu.

Bulega passed Bautista for second with 14 laps to go, and dropped his teammate to the tune of a second, but he was already two seconds adrift of the leader by that point, a gap he barely dented.

There were seven seconds behind third-placed Bautista to Andrea Locatelli in fourth place, while Alex Lowes took fifth. Gardner rounded out the top six in the end, ahead of Andrea Iannone who was fairly anonymous - despite an excellent special helmet design - on his way to seventh.

Michael van der Mark was eighth, 19 seconds behind his race-winning teammate, and just over a second ahead of Danilo Petrucci, who made his return to WorldSBK with a ninth place after his huge motocross crash before the Dutch Round. Iker Lecuona rounded out the top 10.

Superpole

Toprak Razgatlioglu, 2024 Emilia-Romagna WorldSBK. Credit: Gold and Goose.

Toprak Razgatlioglu set pole position in WorldSBK Superpole in Misano, although Nicolo Bulega set a faster lap.

The Italian was on pole with a 1:32.221 as the clock ran out, but that lap was then cancelled, putting Razgatlioglu on pole with a 1:32.320. Bulega, meanwhile, ended up second with a 1:32.556. Only Remy Gardner was able to get into the 1:32s other than Razgatlioglu and Bulega, the Australian qualifying third by almost 0.6 seconds off pole.

Alex Lowes heads up row two in fourth place, ahead of Alvaro Bautista - still without a front row start in 2024 - and Andrea Locatelli, who matched his best qualifying of the year with sixth place.

Andrea Iannone, Sam Lowes, and Dominique Aegerter make up row three, while Michael Ruben Rinaldi completes the qualifying top 10; Tito Rabat and Scott Redding join him on row four.

FP2

Nicolo Bulega was fastest in WorldSBK FP2 at Misano, but was unable to beat the best time of Toprak Razgatlioglu in FP1.

Bulega, though, was still over 0.4 seconds ahead of Alvaro Bautista in FP2, while Remy Gardner and Andrea Iannone also dipped into the 1:33s.

Razgatlioglu, despite a crash in the middle of the session that called his afternoon early, was fifth, ahead of Iker Lecuona by 0.001 seconds. Alex Lowes took seventh, ahead of Sam Lowes, Dominique Aegerter, and Michael Ruben Rinaldi who rounded out the top 10.

FP1

Toprak Razgatlioglu was fastest in ominous fashion in WorldSBK FP1 at Misano, with over 0.3 seconds separating him from second place.

Alex Lowes, 2024 Dutch WorldSBK. Credit: Gold and Goose.

It was Alex Lowes, fresh off re-signing for Kawasaki's new Bimota project for 2025, who was closest to Razgatlioglu, but 0.560 down.

Lowes had been fastest early in the session, before a red flag came out for Philipp Oettl, whose GMT94 Yamaha expired exiting turn six.

Razgatlioglu dominated from then on, though, lapping multiple times in the 1:33s, when the rest couldn't manage one lap below 1:34.

Nicolo Bulega was third-fastest, ahead of Axel Bassani and Andrea Iannone. Alvaro Bautista was sixth, and Michael van der Mark in seventh was the final rider to lap within a second of Razgatlioglu's best. Jonathan Rea, Remy Gardner, and Ducati wildcard Michele Pirro rounded out the top 10.
