Yamaha is set to bring a new aerodynamic package to the MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix this weekend.

The Iwata marque tested the new fairing at a recent private test at Mugello, which will host the Italian Grand Prix next month.

"After the private Mugello Test, we settled on an aerodynamics version we'll try here this weekend," said Fabio Quartararo. "I'm interested to see what it will be like."

Alex Rins added that the new package is "the version I liked," while Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team Manager Maio Meregalli explained that, although the new aerodynamics were positive in Mugello, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has not recently been a circuit that has suited the YZR-M1.

"The next two weeks are going to be very important with the Catalan GP and Italian GP back to back," Meregalli said. "In Barcelona we are going to implement some of our findings from the private test we held last week in Mugello. Based on the positive data, we are most likely going to homologate the second aerodynamic package.

"However, Montmeló usually doesn't have as much grip as Mugello, especially on the first day of the GP weekend. Last year this was a problem for us, but we are preparing a countermeasure with the aim to manage this in the best way possible."

The 2023 Catalan Grand Prix, which was held in September compared to this year's May date, saw Fabio Quartararo finish FP1 in ninth, but 1.2 seconds off the fastest pace, and Franco Morbidelli was eighth. In the afternoon Practice, though, Quartararo was 17th, 1.4 seconds off the pace, and Morbidelli was 18th, a further half-a-tenth behind. Quartararo qualified 17th, Morbidelli 16th, but Quartararo went forwards in the race (partly thanks to the first corner incidents) and finished seventh, 10 seconds behind winner Aleix Espargaro, who has this week announced his retirement from MotoGP.

A new aerodynamic homologation brought to Barcelona would be Yamaha's first in-season update of the 2024 season, having run the package it started the year with until now on race weekends. Under the new MotoGP Concessions system, Yamaha (and Honda) are allowed two new aerodynamic homologations per season based on their performance in 2023. Therefore, if Yamaha brings a new aerodynamic package to Barcelona, it will have one remaining for the 2024 season.

Honda is yet to bring a new aerodynamic homologation in 2024; as are Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia - all of whom have one in-season update each.
