'I was too optimistic' - Alex Marquez details his Turn One crash

Gold & Goose

Alex Marquez was 'lucky' at the British Grand Prix after crashing at the first corner on the first lap.

Alex Marquez had qualified on the front row for the British Grand Prix and got off to a perfect start as he headed into Turn One in front.

However, the moment he touched his front brakes, his BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP machine slid out from underneath him and went into the barriers.

Marquez admitted that he was 'lucky' when the red flag was shown, so he could restart the race from his original grid spot.

He went on to finish the race in fifth place after struggling with his front end in the restarted race.

"Ciao," Marquez said when asked about his first start when he crashed at Turn One.

"It was like ciao. It was not that strange of a crash, I know what happened, I went into the corner too optimistically.

"I was trying hard in that moment, and I was too optimistic with the medium front. I had too much lean angle with the front ride height device on; at that point, I needed to be really aggressive with the brakes.

"At that point, I then lost the front, luckily, there was a red flag, so I could restart the race. But Marc was luckier, if we both had scored 0, they would have closed in on us in the Championship.

"But instead, I only lost two points to Marc, but it was a nice weekend for us. Motorbikes are always like this, you can win, you can lose, and you can save it, so in Race Two I could save it.

"I am happy with our performance and I am looking forward to Aragon."

After crashing on his first bike, Marquez had to swap to his second option bike, but he found that his second bike was 'completely right' when compared to his first bike.

"The feeling was completely right," he explained when asked about his second bike compared to his first bike.

"I made a mistake in going with the medium front again; the team pushed me to go with the soft, but I was more confident with the medium.

"We need to learn from these situations and not make these mistakes again, because they can cost us a lot of points, like in Le Mans.
