HM Plant Honda’s Cal Crutchlow has scored his debut British Superbike win at Thruxton this afternoon in a two-part race that was red-flagged after an horrific crash (click here). After the restart, Crutchlow took the 15-lap second session and made it his own.
Race one winner Shane Byrne was second after a battle with Michael Rutter, who takes his second podium of the day.
When the lights went out in part one, Byrne led into the first corner, but at the end of the first lap Leon Haslam moved ahead and was followed by Karl Harris, Michael Rutter and Cal Crutchlow. Harris made a move at the end of lap two to take second, but Shakey took it back half a lap later.
Byrne moved to the front on lap four while Haslam and Karl Harris touched causing them both to go off track and fall down the order. Haslam rejoined in fifth and Harris in seventh.
Meanwhile Crutchlow moved up to second, followed by Rutter, with a gap of 1.2s temporarily taking the pressure off him. Adam Jenkinson couldn’t continue his success on his second bike and ran further down the order in 14th, eventually crashing at Church.
Jenkinson has broken his wrist and hurt his back, but seems ok.
As Crutchlow set the fastest lap of the weekend with a 1’15.763, the red flag came out.
Tom Sykes returned to fill the final place of the front row on the re-start and led for a couple of laps but he came under attack and slowly made his way back to eighth – still a result after such a massive accident. The restart also benefitted Leon Camier who claimed fourth overall.
It didn’t take long for Crutchlow to take the lead and pull away. By the end of lap two, Shakey was pushed down to fifth and had a bit of work to do, which he duly did. Haslam retired from the race putting the success of HM Plant Honda on the shoulders of his team-mate. Sean Emmett was an early retirement in part two.
Stuart Easton and Scott Smart both put in great performances, finishing sixth and 12th respectively.
John Laverty, Martin Jessop and Tom Tunstall took the top three positions for the Cup with the Chris Burns crashing out and Steve Mercer retiring from the race. Other retirements included Simon Andrews on lap one of the initial race and within the restart Luck Quigley went out with technical problems on lap 11.
