Marlboro Ducati's Valentino Rossi has hit back at 'too old' comments made by five-time MotoGP World Champion Mick Doohan, saying the Aussie resents the fact Rossi won more titles than the Honda man.
Doohan said he thought Rossi was too old to win another world championship but the Italian has put it down to sour grapes and says he will speak to Doohan in person.
"He said what he thought. Doohan often talks about me. Like I said, it’s kind of funny, because at the beginning, he tried to rob [not count] my two world championships in 125 and 250. After, when I went to Yamaha, he thought he was safe, but unfortunately for him, I had seven titles and he had five," said The Doctor, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
"He won 54 races, I won 78 in the premier class [Vale has actually won 79]. So in my opinion, Doohan never accepted that. He resented it a little. Whenever he speaks, he doesn’t speak very well. The other time, he said I won’t become world champion again, this time he said maybe I’m at the end of my career. I think that’s why he said it. Anyway, I’m a friend of Doohan’s, and if he asks, I’ll say the same thing to him."
