MotoGP Valencia: Danny Webb takes debut pole position

Britain's Danny Webb has taken his debut 125cc pole position at the Valencia MotoGP round this afternoon in mixed conditions, fending off a late charge by Frenchman Louis Rossi to top the timesheets by a little under half a second.

Webb put in lap of 1'45.898 on his Mahindra to secure number one spot with his final circulation and was more than two seconds clear of John Zarco until Rossi hopped into second place on a 1'46.325. Louis Salom completes the front row for tomorrow's race. Webb will go down in history as the last rider to set a 125cc two-stroke pole position and he did so in front of the bosses from Mahindra, one of India biggest companies.

“What an honour to take the very last two-stroke pole position, the first of my career and the first for Mahindra,” explained a delighted Webb who will ride for the team in the new Moto3 four-stroke Championship next year. “I took the gamble on the slick tyres and rode round the puddles and I think the boss of Mahindra should come to every race.”

Champion-elect Nico Terol six places behind title challenger Zarco in ninth place with Danny Kent taking his Red Bull Ajo bike to 18th place. Wildcard John McPhee is 25th, Taylor Mackenzie one place further back while Harry Stafford was outside the 107% time but will more than likely be allowed in by race direction.
