Monster Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow is having to use double the amount of brake pressure to achieve the same stopping power as his team-mate Andrea Dovizioso and says he needs to find at least half-a-second lap in today's MotoGP sessions at Laguna Seca today.

The Isle of Man resident finished sixth in free practice yesterday despite a 90mph get off at turn 10, in which he says he was lucky to get away with just a small friction burn, when he was behind quickest man Dani Pedrosa.

"It was one of those things, I went in a little bit faster with more lean angle and never had enough grip. Dani was in front of me and went in faster so that shows we need to improve. If a guy has gone in faster than me and hasn't crashed, and I have crashed then we need to improve the setting," said Crutchlow, speaking at Laguna.

"We go into the corner, shut and brake in the same place as Dovi and we have to have nearly double the amount of brake pressure to stop the bike. I am a couple of kilos heavier but it shouldn't be a massive difference but the bike just does not stop.

"So we're having a little bit of a problem with that, a bit of wheelie and some grip. We have got half a second a lap to find, at least. Ben is obviously going faster this weekend as he has nothing to worry about any more, but we know how fast he is around Laguna.

"Me and Dovi are pretty close, he did his time on the hard tyre, I did mine on the softs but we had to use the softs at the end because I had just crashed with the hard so it's the same thing. We need more tyres. Not just us, everyone. But I went faster this afternoon after just four laps than I did here last year."
