MotoGP has taken another step closer to money-saving control electronics after the announcement that giants Magneti Marelli will have a spec-ECU available for the 2013 season.
Control electronics have been utilised in British Superbikes for 2012 and, despite some early glitches, have proved to be fairly pain-free unless you happen to own a Panigale or two.
Whether more control should be introduced into a prototype class which is already limited by tyres, engine size and avilable amount of fuel is a subject of discussion. In fact, all that makes it not a prototype class at all.
Anyway, MotoGP ringmaster Carmelo Ezpeleta is very happy that he is able to surge forward with his idea but it remains to be seen what the MSMA will think as the current season draws to a close.
"I cannot hide the fact that I am very happy with this new cooperation with Magneti Marelli. The agreement reached with the Italian company merely validates MotoGP as a competition that incorporates and encourages the latest and most innovative technology. The experience of this company, which has spent many years at the highest level of competition in motor sport, represents a major step in the premier-class of two-wheel racing," said Ezpeleta.
