MotoGP to implement penalty point system

MotoGP bosses have this morning confirmed that riders who persistently flout the rules will be given penalty points which could end in a one-event ban.

Points will be handed out by race direction and, at various thresholds, sentences will be imposed: four points means a back-of-the-grid start, seven points and the rider will start the next race from pitlane and ten points is a one-event ban.

"It has been recognised that there is the need to address the problem of riders who are constantly being warned or penalised for endangering other riders or committing other serious offences like assaulting marshals or other officials," said an FIM spokesman.

This ruling was just part of a raft of other changes that will be implemented for the 2013 season:

A revised allocation of tyres will be introduced. In principle, riders will receive an additional rear tyre and the 'soft' front tyre offered as an option in 2012, but not used, will no longer be available. In that case, the exception concerning allocations of different grades of front tyres at certain specified circuits will be cancelled. The decision on the precise make up of the allocation will be taken following the official test at Sepang on 5-7 February.

In this context, Bridgestone will be making available a 'softer' rear tyre for use by CRT entries.

After Jorge Lorenzo's rant at Valencia, dashes will now display any caution flags being waved, including the blue flags to let slower riders know what is closing fast.

Riders will now have to get to within 107 per cent of the pole time in the four practice sessions - a lightning lap in morning warm-up will no longer be good enough.

Carbon composite wheels are now banned and CRT bikes will have to use the regulation 320mm brake discs.
