MotoGP: News, gossip and intrigue

MotoGP ringmaster Carmelo Ezpeleta took the opportunity to hijack Ducati's Wroom pre-season knees-up to outline his ideas for the series and his new project, World Superbikes.

The long and the short of it is that all world championship racing should cost much less with WSBK machines coming with a price tag of no-more than a quarter of a million quid and World Supersport less than €85k. He also said that Superstock racing in that paddock would disappear, hinting that it may be replaced with a 500cc four-stroke series.

Meanwhile, in MotoGP, the MSMA teams (which field prototypes) would definitely run with a limited fuel capacity of 20 litres but, as a trade off, use their own electronics software in spec-hardware along with an engine development freeze, which doesn't mean an awful lot in the grand scheme.

The privately-entered teams (or CRT) will have the choice of leasing a production RC213V for about a million spankers, renting a Yamaha M1 engine (£800,000) to put in their own chassis or continuing with the current CRT formula. They will also be allowed 20 per cent more fuel but have to use the Marelli spec-electronics.

Ezpeleta also said that two races in South America could end up on the calendar in the near future. The cancelled Argentina race will return to the schedule and another, at a new Rio De Janeiro, will be added. Whether this means there will be 19 races in 2014 or some European ones will be dropped is not yet clear.
