Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes has admitted his challenge for the 2013 MCE British Superbike title came to an end when his engine let go in race one at Silverstone yesterday which capped a weekend of problems for the Australian.

Brookes was plagued with chatter all weekend which even the most strenuous of efforts from his Moneymore-based team couldn't fix and then a fifth place in race two sealed the Bringelly man's fate.

"I've never had an easy weekend in racing but the certainly the hardest ones are when you're not winning. The races that you win are when it is all going well. You don't get there by chance, you had to work for it, the bike was right and you had the capability to win," said a downcast Brookes at the circuit.

"Then you get Twitter messages and everyone wants to shake your hand, everyone wants to tell you how brilliant you rode and how awesome it all was. Out there, in race two, I rode as hard as in any race that I have won. The reward for a hard ride isn't there when you're fifth but it doesn't mean you didn't ride your arse off.

"I put everything into it that I could and rode it as best I could but it wasn't there. I had chatter right from the start and it always gets worse as the tyre wears inconsistently so the vibration gets worse.

"At the start I was getting dragged along by Alex and Byrne, and then Tommy got past me but I was able to hang with them but then I got messed up by (team-mate) PJ. Once I lost the tow and there was a gap, I couldn't do anything more. I was lapping close to the front guys but without the tow on the straights, you can't make up the gap.

"I am quite frustrated with PJ for not leaving it until later in the race to make that move. It would have been better to leave it as a group and stay together instead of screwing us up and dropping off. But he is a kid, he will learn the more he races. I thought he was supposed to help me, but it didn't feel like it then.

"I can't complain because I shouldn't be racing with PJ, I should be out the front so it's my own fault he is even in my race. He is doing the right thing by himself. Maybe the team should step in but I have been in that situation myself and it sucks.

"After the fall at Assen and the DNF in race one, it didn't really make any difference, we're grasping at straws. Realistically, if you look at it, we're not in the fight for the championship anymore."
