MotoGP Phillip Island: Aussie track 'better for Yamaha in theory'

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has said the cooler temperatures and comparative lack of heavy braking areas at Phillip Island should, in theory, help him to keep pace with Marc Marquez this weekend - but he tempered that by adding that theory doesn't always work.

In order to keep his title hopes alive, Lorenzo must beat the young Repsol Honda man in Australia as all Marquez needs is eight points more than his older compatriot in order to lift the championship silverware on Sunday. And Lorenzo has been beated the last two times out.

"Last two results are not the best, we wanted to win or finish in front of Marc. We try everything in Aragon, we try everything in Sepang but we couldn't do it. In Sepang, I finish worse than I expected, the hot weather didn't help us a lot but it is done, we can't think of the past," said Lorenzo, speaking at Phillip Island.

"We hope the Phillip Island conditions will help, also we have to see how is the new asphalt. We have to be open minded and try to win this race. In theory, it should be more suited to the Yamaha, it doesn't have so many brakings which is our weakest point and should be much colder but sometimes the theory doesn't work."
