Go&Fun Gresini's Scott Redding took a step-by-step approach to the first day's MotoGP testing at Sepang and has already identified he needs more power under braking and to be able to get into corners faster.
But the youngster is happy with his fully-fit outing on the bike. He thinks the electronics are holding him up a little on corner exit and is now making a plan to cut the deficit to Open class quickest man Aleix Espargaro, who is some three seconds quicker on the FTR Yamaha combination
"It went well. To be fully fit is the main thing and the biggest issue is it is really, really hot here but that's the same for everyone. We're just working away with all the settings to find my way a little bit," said Redding, speaking at Sepang.
"The Yamahas of Espargaro and Colin really surprised me. When you look at the gap to Hayden or Aoyama, the gap wasn't so big but this is my first time with a MotoGP bike so I was quite happy with that. It's 21st but I'm not looking at the full ranking, just the guys on the same bikes. We need to find something to get the gap back to Aleix Espargaro, he was impressive today.
"The Honda now feels much better. I have no experience with this bike. Every time I follow someone, I find quite a lot of time but on a big circuit like this, you never see anyone. It's quite difficult to learn by yourself.
"This track is nice with a MotoGP bike, it's a lot faster, you can get some slides and stuff going compared to Valencia which is like a glorified kart circuit. It's harder to make lots of runs as the track is longer and the temperature so high.
"My exit feels good but we are struggling with the brakes. There is not so much power with the Nissins at the moment but they are working on that. I need to work a little on my entry and with the electronics on the exit, I am asking for more but it's not yet giving me it."
