Factory Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo remained on top of the Phillip Island MotoGP test timesheets for the final day and for a single lap was four-tenths faster than Dani Pedrosa and half a second ahead of team-mate Valentino Rossi.
Over the three days, Lorenzo made use of the YZR-M1’s liking of the high-grid Phillip Island surface to post the fastest time of all, a 1’29.068 while Pedrosa was three-tenths behind, Ducati’s Andrea Dovizoso in third and Rossi 0.448s back.
But, at Bridgestone’s behest, all the MotoGP men carried out a long run to test the longevity of the new 2014 tyres and it was The Doctor who had the pace, spending most of his run in the 1’29s while Lorenzo steered clear, remaining in the 1’30s for his entire, and huge, 22-lap stint.
Pedrosa was also, on the face of it, faster than Lorenzo, with three laps in the 1’29s and Cal Crutchlow also dropped one in, a 1’29.924, halfway through his 16-lapper.
“I was very happy about today. First because the weather is very similar to the race in October, it is more colder so we can understand better and all today, I am happy about my speed in the simulation as I did a half race distance in the afternoon with a very good laptime,” said Rossi, speaking at Phillip Island.
“I think that like Malaysia this test is very positive for me and it will be very hard from Qatar but I think we can be competitive.”
