Cadwell BSB: Kiyo leads final practice as Byrne crashes

Buildbase BMW’s Ryuichi Kiyonari was the quickest rider in the final MCE British Superbike free practice session at Cadwell Park, and topped the timesheets after a 1’27.436 lap. Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne was on course for the fastest rider accolade but crashed, unhurt at Hall Bend.

Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes left it till his final lap to set his quickest time – a 1’27.446, but in the end was one-one hundredths of a second too slow to topple King Kiyo from the top of the timing–screens.

Initially it was Kiyonari who set the pace with a 1’27.735 followed by Brookes and Byrne. Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Dan Linfoot was riding high inside the top four, but crashed after ten minutes out on track at the Gooseneck, but was declared OK at the track side.

With 30 minutes remaining Halsall Racing’s Jon Kirkham made his way inside the top five with a 1’28.409, with Milwaukee Yamaha’s Tommy Bridewell and RAF Reserves Honda’s Peter Hickman in tow. On his 11th rotation of the Lincolnshire circuit Byrne went up to second on the sheets edging Brookes by two tenths with a 1’27.693, but moments later the current championship leader crashed at Hall Bend, unhurt.

With just under 15 minutes left to the final free practice outing Hickman went up to fourth on the timing screens, getting the better of Kirkham. But that lasted seconds, as WD-40’s Barry Burrell catapulted into the place of Hickman with a 1’28.045, on the ten minute mark.

Kirkham was trying to regain his place inside the top five, but tried a little too hard and crashed at the Hairpin, and was fortunately uninjured. At the flag Hickman remained in fourth, with Bridewell and Burrell completing the top six.

Tyco Suzuki’s John Hopkins narrowly missed out on a top ten time, and was pulled down to 11th after his team-mate, Josh Waters went 0.05 seconds quicker to round up the top ten. Returning injured riders, Buildbase BMW’s James Westmoreland and GBmoto Kawasaki’s James Ellison ended FP3 in 15th and 17th respectively.
