MotoGP Silverstone: Miller tops tight opening Moto3 practice

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Jack Miller left it till his final lap to edge ahead of Calvo Team’s Isaac Vinales and Estrella’s Alex Marquez to top the opening Moto3 free practice timesheets at Silverstone this morning.

Initially it was Marquez who was the dominant force out on the British track, with his team-mate Alex Rins on his tail, but in the end the formidable Aussie was too strong and a last lap dash certainly paid off for the KTM lad – after a 2’16.439.

Marquez looked to take the FP1 spoils and was second on the sheets with a 2’16.517, but at the flag Vinales went one tenth quicker to topple the Spaniard down to third. Fenati and Rins completed the top five.

Elsewhere British hopeful’s SaxoPrint’s John McPhee and Red Bull Husqvarna’s Danny Kent where inside the top ten times for the majority of the 40 minute session, with McPhee as high as ninth with 30 minutes remaining.

But when the chequered flag appeared the Scottish rider fell back to round up the top ten, with Kent one tenth off the SaxoPrint rider, to finish the morning in 11th, with their best times of 2’17.421 and 2’17.507 respectively.

Wildcard entry, Redline KTM’s Joe Irving, ended his first time out in the Moto3 class in 31st. The rider who is more familiar to the MCE British Superbike fans in Motul British Motostar class managed to put down a 2’21.236.
