Speed Up’s Sam Lowes didn’t manage to make it into the top three times during the first Moto2 free practice session at his home circuit of Silverstone, and had to settle for sixth on the sheets – after a 2’09.639. AirAsia Caterham’s Johann Zarco was the quickest rider and had three tenths over the best time set by Lowes.
The Frenchman set his best lap halfway through the 45 minute outing, and was untouchable after a 2’09.312. The only rider to really challenge him was Corsi, and in the end he was a tenth off the pace to go second fastest, with a 2’09.477 rotation, with Pasini completing the top three.
At first it was Lowes who set the pace in the initial stages, and headed the sheets after a handful of minutes. But things were not great for fellow compatriot, Gino Rea onboard his AGT Rea Racing bike - as he crashed at The Loop after only ten minutes out on track, but he was unhurt, and did make it out for one last lap before the end of the outing.
The rain started to fall slightly on some parts of the circuit with seconds left and all the riders edged off the pace to slowly returned to the pits. When the chequered flag came out Kallio completed the top ten, with championship leader Rabat ending the morning in a disappointing 12th.
Wildcard rider, Jeremy McWilliams, riding for the Bennetts Borough Superior team made his debut with his crew in Moto2 and ended the morning in a respectable time of 2'20.206. The veteran racer managed to keep up with some of the young guns and ended up 35th overall. Aspar’s stand-in rider Dakota Mamola was also making his debut in the class and ended FP1 33rd on the sheets.
