British rider Danny Kent left it till his final lap to soar to the top of the second Moto3 free practice timesheet, at his home track of Silverstone. The youngster came from no where to put down a 2’15.572, going one tenth quicker than Antonelli – who dominated the final part of the session, on his Red Bull backed machine.
Kent pulled a superfast lap out of the bag, and has proved to the rest of his colleagues that he means business this weekend. Fellow Brit, SaxoPrint’s John McPhee was quietly making his way up the timing-screens and with 15 minutes of track time available was as high as third, but soon slipped back to ninth at the flag, after his best time of 2’15.930.
Oliveira was the first to set a flying lap to clock a 2’15.870, with Binder and Marquez hot on his heels. Ten minutes later Vinales wanted to join the party and made an impact. The Spanish rider lapped a 2’15.648, only to be pipped to the post by fellow countryman Rins, by 0.01 seconds.
Championship leader, Red Bull KTM Ajo's Jack Miller could only manage a time outside the top twenty. The Aussie topped the opening free practice session, earlier this morning, but could not replicate his good form this afternoon, and finished 23rd overall.
In the end it was Kent, Antonelli and Rins, who completed the top three, followed by Vinales, Fenati and Marquez. Wildcard rider, Redline KTM’s Joe Irving finished the session in 33rd on the timing-screens, with his best rotation, of a 2’19.547.
