Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo bagged his 80th MotoGP podium during the race at Silverstone this afternoon. He was on course to repeat the victory that he experienced at the track a mere twelve months ago, but was involved in a tussle for the win with eventual race victor, Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez.
Lorenzo fought till the bitter end, but the two nearly collided on track, and Marquez was able to edge ahead to take the win. The two-time champion did not have the best of starts to his weekend, with tyre issues blighting his free practice sessions, but his team worked hard to overcome any major grievances, and the result was evident on track today.
“This race is better than expected considering how we started the weekend, so I am proud, and we did a good job,” said Lorenzo, speaking at the track this afternoon.
“Our bike - well we still need to improve and it is very difficult to defend the position, and the rear hard tyre this weekend was not the best for us. But we improved the bike so much from Friday. But I didn’t expect to be so fast still, after 20 laps.
“I had a good start and I was aggressive in the first corner, and I pushed to be as fast as possible, and better than I have ever [ridden around here]. I am still four or five tenths off Marc, but I found it hard to fight with the tyre at the end.”
