Ducati MotoGP boss Paolo Ciabatti believes Sunday’s win at the Red Bull Ring is just the starting point of his firm’s climb up the championship hierarchy and will continue with the partnership of Gigi Dall’Igna and reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo.

A one-two for the squad ended six years of hurt in domination at Spielberg which saw the factory team outgun Yamaha’s combination of Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi for the first time since Phillip Island six years ago.

“This victory finally breaks a fasting that was lasting since 2010. Dovizioso and Iannone went close to win in several occasions but they couldn’t make it for a reason or the other. This win breaks a spell and – at the same time – it’s an important starting point. I believe we can be competitive on all the circuits,” Ciabatti told bikesportnews.com.

“Michelin has built tyres that allow all the bikes on the grid to fight at the best. We have been fast the whole weekend with both riders. Iannone did a brave choice on the grid. The soft option combined with this riding style allowed him to be faster especially in the last part of the race. He did a perfect race. But Dovizioso was close, very close. It’s a great satisfaction for Ducati to claim the first win since 2010 with our two riders on the podium. It’s a victory for the whole team.

“We can be very competitive also in Brno or Silverstone, just to look at the next rounds. Then of course, winning is always difficult because the level of our competitors is high.

“But we are also there. When Gigi (Dall’Igna) said that the target this year is to win two races, as we missed this goal in 2015, it seemed a joke, but it isn’t. This victory is a starting point. The spell is broken and once again I want to share this success with all the guys of the racing department at Borgo Panigale.”
