Oulton BSB: 'Disappointing' race weekend for Ducati's Byrne

Be Wiser Ducati's Shane Byrne failed to clinch a podium during the MCE British Superbike weekend at Oulton Park, even though he set the fastest ever lap at the circuit during qualifying.

The fact that his title rival,  JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Leon Haslam won all three races means that Byrne is no longer leading the series, and has dropped to second in the standings, with three points separating  Byrne from Haslam.

Byrne was the first rider  to secure his Showdown position and now that the top six have been decided all the riders have their points rounded up to 500, with the podium credits added on.

The multiple-champ finished race one in ninth after a big slide on track. Then a crash at Hizzy's in race two scuppered any hopes of him redeeming some podium credits.  But Byrne did have his best finish in the final race, and crossed the line in fifth on his Panigale.

“That was a difficult weekend and we’ve left without the results we wanted or deserved. From setting the fastest ever lap  yesterday to not scoring a race win or even a podium is disappointing but  that’s racing," said Byrne.

"The  slip yesterday cost us a podium and then a crash today in the second race  really put us on the back foot for the third race so it was always going to be  tough given the pace this weekend. Although I’ve surrendered a lot of podium  points to Leon  here, I’m in the Showdown and now going to three tracks I love so I’ll be going  out all guns blazing to get back to winning ways starting at Donington next  weekend. Thanks to my team as ever for doing a great job.”
