Movistar Yamaha’s young gun Maverick Vinales has admitted the new YZR-M1 MotoGP chassis does not suit his riding style as he likes to be aggressive and the older version of the 2017 frame allowed just that.
Vinales has crashed out of two races this year and surrendered his title lead to Andrea Dovizioso at Assen on Sunday. He thinks there is a lot of room for improvement in the chassis upgrade but the team must be careful with what they do.
“The new bike we bring in Assen has a lot of potential, but maybe isn’t the best for my riding style because I’m used to being really aggressive,” said Vinales, speaking at the track.
“The chassis I rode in the first part of the season gave me a little bit more confidence to be aggressive on the bike, especially changing direction it was really stable, and then quickly on the gas, that’s what I feel more comfortable. Anyway on the new bike we have many areas where we can improve, so we have to make the correct choice.”
Yamaha have brought both versions of the chassis to Germany, so both Vinales and team-mate Valentino Rossi will be able to make choices after tomorrow’s opening free practice sessions.
