Italtrans Racing Team’s Mattia Pasini was on fire in the second Moto2 free practice session at Brno’s MotoGP round this afternoon.
The 31-year-old Italian was banging out 2’03s lap after lap after lap in the forty minute session. In fact, Pasini was able to complete a total of six laps in the 2’03 bracket. However, with a minute remaining in the session Pasini pulled out a 2’02.975 which made sure he would finish the session on top of the time sheets.
Pasini’s lap time is just .592 seconds slower than Tito Rabat’s circuit best which he set in 2014.
SKY Racing Team VR46’s Francesco Bagnaia at one stage looked as if he might have got the better hand over Pasini, as with four minutes to run in the session he managed to hit the top of the times with a 2’03.237. Pasini of course was not going to have anything to do with that and made sure he was able to finish ahead of Bagnaia.
Just like in Moto3, a whole raft of riders left their run till the last few seconds of the session to lay down their best times. Xavi Vierge put in a blinding lap to finish in in third place after he guided his Tech 3 Racing machine to a 2’03.294.
Fourth place went to Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo) who could only manage a 2'03.421. Oliveira, who was the fastest rider in Free Practice one was a mere 0.009 seconds faster than German’s Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Intact GP) who ended up in fifth place respectfully.
Italians Franco Morbidelli slipped his way back to sixth place by the end of the session. Throughout the session, Morbidelli was sitting in second place behind Pasini. Morbidelli’s best time was a 2'03.463, which was set on his seventeenth lap in the session.
Rounding out the top ten was Luca Marini (Forward Racing Team), Jorge Navarro (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2), Dominique Aegerter (Kiefer Racing) and Swiss rider Thomas Lüthi (CarXpert Interwetten).
In the early part of the session, Lüthi, who trails Morbidelli 34-points in the championship, was as high as second in the times behind Pasini.
Britain’s very own Tarran Mackenzie improved his times and overall standings by finishing in thirty first place with a time of 2'06.028.
