Silverstone BSB: Iddon quickest in wet second practice

Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon was unfazed by the wet weather conditions at Silverstone, during the second MCE British Superbike free practice session this afternoon.

The Stockport lad propelled his S1000RR to the top of the sheets with a 2’26.104 and gained pace throughout the 45 minute outing. The fastest rider in FP1 was Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne and he was able to go one second quicker than his best time set a few hours earlier, but he was still unable to topple Iddon from the top of the timesheets.

The reigning champion put down a 2’27.625 but was not able to lap a sub 2’27 time. Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha’s Josh Brookes took a small tumble at Abbey, but got back on his R1 and left his best lap until last. The Bringelly rider soared to P3 just as the chequered flag appeared with a 2’28.343, with Bridewell being pushed down to fourth fastest.

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam ended the session in the gravel after a small off at Luffield, but his 2’29.400 time was enough for him to make it into the top five times. McAMS Yamaha’s Michael Laverty had a solid session and a 2’29.504 placed him P6, followed by Dixon, Ellison and Hopkins.

Potential showdown contenders, Smiths Racing’s Peter Hickman, Honda Racing’s Jason O’Halloran and the returning, Luke Mossey ended FP2 just outside the top ten times in 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.

There were a few fallers in the wet conditions, including Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot who fell at Farm and BSB newbie, Dean Harrison who crashed unhurt at Luffield and was able to bring his bike back to the pits. The debutant ended FP2 in 22nd.

Smrz also crashed and remounted at Aintree. Bennetts Suzuki’s Taylor Mackenzie had a technical problem at Copse and came to an abrupt stop with 17 minutes remaining. Luke Stapleford is riding in place of the injured Billy McConnell, and the former British Supersport champ ended the session in 21st.
