Silverstone’s Bennetts British Superbike Showdown decider will run on the national circuit to try and avoid a repeat of last weekend’s MotoGP disaster.
The British Grand Prix was cancelled after standing water made it impossible to race and riders voted to cancel the meeting, much to the annoyance of almost everyone, it would appear.
“I understand following the MotoGP cancellation this weekend there is an element of concern about the implications for BSB at Silverstone next week. We are conducting an investigation and have already engaged an independent track consultant for that purpose,” said Silverstone boss Stuart Pringle.
“To ensure a great weekend of racing, we have agreed with BSB and its governing body, the MCRCB, to use this as an opportunity to take a positive step and run BSB on the National Circuit for the first time. It will tighten the racing right up, be an incredibly exciting spectacle for the fans and be something very different for the championship.”
The format for Silverstone will see three exciting 30-lap races held on the 1.64mile National Circuit which has previously been used for British and National Championship level motorcycle events and is currently used for the circuit’s annual British Touring Car Championship round.
The original timetable issued for this event is largely unchanged. Free practice session lengths will be extended and all race lap distances will be changed to reflect the shorter lap length.
Three Bennetts BSB Championship races will decide this year’s six Title Fighters will now each be held over 30 laps.
