Flexbox HP40 Kalex Moto2 rider Augusto Fernandez pipped Fabio Di Giannantonio, denying the Italian his first Moto2 victory after a hard block pass on the final lap saw the Spaniard take the spoils in Misano.

Starting from the outside of the front row, Fernandez got off the line well, however, it was pole sitter Di Giannantonio who led the pack through the first lap and early stages of the race.

It wasn’t long before a lead group of four, consisting of Di Giannantonio, Alex Marquez and Tom Luthi, quickly started putting some distance into the chasing pack. Marquez quickly worked his way forward from a bad start, however, the front two were all over each other from the mid-point in the race onwards.

Luthi made a mistake, and as the race progressed, Marquez was slowly dropped by the front two. Di Giannantonio led over the line and despite an attempted pass at turn two, the Italian held on. There was drama as whilst closely following, Fernandez ran onto the green at turn twelve, before a very firm block pass into turn fourteen saw the Spaniard pass Di Giannantonio.

The Italian had nowhere to go, leaving the Spaniard clear to come through and take the victory. The result is still yet to be finalized, as the duo have been asked to visit the stewards to discuss the incident.

If the result does remain, then the gap at the top of the World Championship would be down to just 26 points between Marquez and Fernandez, with six races remaining.

Luthi held onto fourth place, with Sam Lowes coming home in fifth, his best finish of the season since the opening night in Qatar. Brad Binder was sixth on his KTM, with Jorge Navarro, Xavi Vierge, Enea Bastianini and Lorenzo Baldassarri rounded out the top ten.
