MotoGP Aragon: Morbidelli leads third practice, Quartararo suffers big crash

Petronas Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli topped the third MotoGP free practice at Aragon this morning but team-mate and championship leader Fabio Quartararo had his second big crash of the weekend and finished the session in the medical centre.

With track temperatures at an average of 16°C, many riders left it until later to put in their qualifying two efforts but Quartararo was already easily in. He went down at turn 14, losing the front on the kerb before getting spat off his M1 and being taken by ambulance to undergo medical checks.

Morbidelli's 1'49.951 was enough to jump him to second on the combined sheets behind Maverick Vinales, who did go out but was ninth in the session.

Quartararo retained his third overall but was challenged by a charging Cal Crutchlow who hopped his LCR Honda into a combined fourth and half a second off the pace.

KTM's Pol Espargaro upped his game in the session to move into fifth overall on a 1'48.319, just in front of Suzuki's Joan Mir who was also an improver this morning.

Alex Marquez took his Repsol Honda to seventh, one place in front of Taka Nakagami which means all three Hondas are into qualifying two.

Alex Rins' 1'38.633 means both Suzukis are into the final qualifying session while Aleix Espargaro stole tenth late on and is the last automatic Q2 runner.

All six Ducatis will have to fight it out for a spot Q2 with Jack Miller the hardest done by.

The Australian had set a time good enough for Q2 but it was disallowed as he went through the site of Quartararo's crash just after it happened and contravened the yellow flag rule.
