Mar-Train Yamaha's Stuart Easton extended his championship lead with a dominant Motorpoint British Supersport victory at Assen this afternoon. The Scotsman seemed to be under threat from pole setter Richard Cooper, but he broke away on the last lap to claim his eighth win of the year.
TAG Triumph's Cooper stormed around the outside of Easton at the first corner of Haarbocht to take the holeshot but he didn't hold on to the lead for long. Smiths Triumph's Glen Richard settled into third on the first lap before crashing out and a lap later his teammate was forced to retire down pit lane, joining Tyco Suzuki's Taylor Mackenzie who was also retired due to a clutch issue.
Championship leader Easton eased under the inside of Cooper at the Geert Timmer Chicane on the second lap to take the lead, as the leading trio began to pull away. The trio quickly became a duo, however, with Luke Mossey beginning to drop backwards. As the front two came on to the last lap they were split by just two tenths of a second but Easton pulled the pin, putting half a second into Cooper to claim the victory and extend his championship lead to twenty two points.
Samsung Honda's Jason O'Halloran stole third place away from Mossey on the last lap with a classic Assen manoeuvre, diving under the inside at the Geert Timmer Chicane. Gearlink Kawasaki's Alastiar Seeley held on to fifth place despite pressure from Dutchman Kervin Bos on his wildcard ride, but the rider was able to secure the cup victory in his first British Championship race. The wizard of Carrickfergus is now further behind Easton in the title chase than he has been all year, with his fitness the key factor in his fading championship ambitions. Seeley's Gearlink teammate Ben Wilson dropped backwards to 24th place due to a technical problem after fighting for a podium in the early stages of the race.
CF Motorsport's Glenn Irwin took seventh place on his debut outing after getting the better of Scott Smart on the last lap. Rounding out the top ten were Luke Stapleford and Rob Guiver, who extends his lead in the cup championship to 46 points after Bjorn Estment could only manage sixth in the cup competition.
