Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot took a gamble and thought that he 'could have been a hero,' during the second MCE British Superbike race at Assen in mixed conditions, but in the end the decision to go out on full wet tyres didn’t pay off.
The rider and his crew decided to opt for full wet tyres in race-two in what started off to be a race where some parts of the circuit were certainly wet, after a rain shower fell moments before the session was about to start.
But the rain held off and even though Linfoot started off strongly and actually led for a short time, the full wets did not adapt well to a drying tack and he slipped out of the points. Linfoot is in the Showdown and thought that his tactic could pay off.
Linfoot did not have a very strong race-one and only managed fourteenth onboard his Fireblade, meaning he only took home two points for his team yesterday. Now the rider wants to put the ‘disaster’ of Assen behind him and is looking to claw back some points at the next round at Silverstone.
“I could have been a hero. Everyone will say what were you doing? It rained, it stopped, it rained, it stopped, it was quite wet to begin with and I thought I will go with it, we are in Showdown,” said Linfoot.
“I lost some points this morning, I thought I will gain them all back if this pays off - it could have been a much different story. Obviously I am disappointed as two points from the round is not good.
“This weekend has been one I’d quite like to forget if I’m honest. In race one we finished fourteenth, which really isn’t where I wanted to be coming into the Showdown. We decided to used a hard tyre with the view of 18-laps in cooler track conditions would have been a benefit towards the end of the race, but it didn’t benefit us for either the start, or the finish of the race.
“I made a bit of a gamble for race two and decided to go with wet tyres, which I felt was the right choice if the weather had maintained its pattern of raining, stopping and raining again. But now in hindsight, this was not the right choice, unfortunately. Leaving Assen with two points is a disaster and I want to forget about this weekend and move to Silverstone where I hope I can get my Showdown off the ground.”
