This weekend sees the re-scheduled Brands Hatch British Superbike meeting which is being piggybacked onto a BMCRC club meeting. The rapid way in which the snowed-off Sunday was re-jigged into the calendar has raised a lot of eyebrows in the BSB paddock and was met with mixed reactions.
Honda Racing UK boss Neil Tuxworth has been very vocal about the Brands schedule change. He has stated that it was all done too quickly with no thought for teams going to the NorthWest 200. And he is additionally disappointed in MSVR's communication as he was made aware of the new dates via the TV.
Honda’s bikes and trucks were scheduled to be shipped to Northern Ieland that weekend, which he has now had to re-arrange causing extra costs for the team. The riders were due to attend various events with from which they have now had to withdraw.
This has also affected the NW200 Ducati team, which will be there to try and win at home. Manager Ken Foley said: “'Obviously there is a huge financial implication that no team would want with re-running the Brands Hatch round. But with the championship already reduced to 12 events because of not racing at Mondello, I would not have wanted to see the round cancelled completely.'
“The other big problem for us is the logistics of getting the Team across to Coleraine for the North West 200 road races. We had originally planned to be there to set up on the Saturday that we will now be practicing at Brands, which will make setting up and preparing the bikes for the North West very tight indeed.
As to combining the races with an MRO event, we’ll just have to wait and see and hope that it works out for all parties concerned. On balance, and whilst it’s not ideal, with the restrictions regarding the use of the Brands GP circuit it would be a crying shame not to race at one of the best circuits in the world, so we all have to face facts and accept the decision that’s already been made.”
And it’s not just the shipping of bikes back and forward, but the actual physical space at Brands which will have to accommodate two championships.
The rescheduling has affected some more teams more than others and has most certainly caused a mixture of views between team managers and riders.
Rizla Suzuki team manager Jack Valentine said: “I think how the paddock will work will be the difficult part. The BSB teams will be in the garages, the support teams are going to be where the Bemsee riders usually are. I think it will be a logistical nightmare and needs some discussion. Bemsee have allowed us to run that weekend so it is up to MSV to see it run smoothly and make sure it doesn’t detract from the BSB meeting.”
Airwaves Ducati’s Colin Wright said: “It hasn't caused us any problems and we are looking forward to racing. Stuart Higgs [race director] has assured us it will be absolutely fantastic.”
Leon Haslam said: “It clashes with NorthWest and it will be a different weekend with no qualifying, but it is what it is and I am sure it will be ok.”
But his HM Plant Honda team-mate Cal Crutchlow said: “I don't think it should have been run at all, we had other commitments. It's great for MRO Series, but we should have been able to do it another weekend, but it is just one of those things. We all have to race and all got to be there and I am looking forward to the round.”
Martin Jessopp of Riders Racing, competing within the Daily Star Cup, is positive about the rescheduling. He said: “It's good it got rescheduled. It got cancelled and if it wasn't for Jonathan Palmer looking at the diary this wouldn't have happened. I think it will also be good for the MRO series, I remember when I started racing in the superteens and whenever we were mixed with the bigger championships it was always a better meeting.”
