Brands BSB: Brookes clinches first win of the season

Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Brookes claimed his first victory of the season at Brands Hatch, as he held off the charge from Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes on the final lap, with Ryuichi Kiyonari comfortably taking the final rostrum spot.

Brookes did not take the lead initially, Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne had that honour and the current champ led till lap four when the Aussie took the lead from Lowes going into Hawthorn Hill.

The lead then changed between the three riders who broke away from Kiyonari leaving a three second gap between third and fourth place. On lap 12 Byrne was back to third and he made a successful attempt to overtake Lowes going into Pilgrims drop.

The triple champion then tried to make a move on leader Brookes at Hawthorns and it worked but only for a few seconds as the rider low sided and hit the gravel, leaving his team in a race against time to get his broken bike ready for race two.

Brookes and Lowes had to battle it out, and even though the Lincolnshire lad came close to challenging for the win, but on the final lap he slightly dropped off the pace and Brookes was able to ease to the victory.

Kiyo had a lonely race as he finished eighth seconds behind his team-mate and remained unchallenged throughout from fifth place finisher Buildbase BMW’s James Westmoreland.

Before the seventh lap Westmoreland was in a battle for fifth with Quattro Plant’s Chris Walker and Milwaukee Yamaha’s James Ellison, who had a shocking start and had to fight his way up from seventh, but on lap seven Walker and Ellison both crashed out at Graham Hill bend while they were in sixth and seventh respectively.

Tyco Suzuki’s PJ Jacobsen was able to hold off the charges of Buildbase BMW’s Jon Kirkham to cross the line in sixth, followed by Kirkham and GBmoto’s Dan Linfoot, who battled his way from tenth to seventh.

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Keith Farmer, MH Kawasaki’s Howie Mainwaring Smart and Bathams Honda rider Michael Rutter rounded off the top ten.
