Airwaves Yamaha's Leon Camier has sensationally won the second British Superbike race at Brands Hatch this afternoon, just six days after starting his YZF-R1 for the first time.
The lanky Kent youngster rode a masterful race, slowly making his way through the top ten and reeling in runaway leader Stuart Easton before passing him on the exit of Surtees, where he has been strongest all day.
Race one winner Sylvain Guintoli followed Camier over the line some two seconds in arrears with HM Plant Honda's Steve Plater, who jumped off his Supersport bike straight into this race, taking the third podium place.
It was the same three riders as the first race who led into the first corner, Hydrex Honda's Stuart Easton, Plater and Karl Harris on the second Hydrex Honda.
The first lap saw Harris move to second making the team mates lead ahead of the HM Plant Honda duo followed by Guintoli in fifth. All rides settled down for a couple of laps until lap three.
Guintoli tried to make an inside move on Richards which caused them to touch slightly, putting all spectators on their edge of their seats. Meanwhile Plater started to put pressure on second placed Harris. As Plater moved up a place, Camier started to attack Guintoli to eventually succeed at Druids on lap six as he started to progress through the grid aiming for the win.
Lap seven saw both Richards and Guintoli get ahead of Harris, who also fell into the clutches of Camier and settled for sixth place, an improvement on his first race DNF. Camier was on a mission and made an inside move on Richards, which caused him to sit up slightly allowing him to go through.
After reaching second a couple of laps later Camier at half race distance was half a second faster than the leader Easton, therefore it was a matter of time until he caught him to overtake on lap eighteen. Never looking back he took the race win with a lead of 2.3s.
The battle behind continued and unfortunately Easton fell down the order to still finish a positive fourth. Meanwhile Guintoli progressed forward to provide entertaining battles that saw several overtakes by the debuting Frenchman forcing him to go wide at the exit allowing Plater back through.
Due to the assistance of Plater making an error at Druids, Guintoli was able to take advantage and finish second overall. Plater claimed a well deserved third place, his second podium of the day following his second place finish in the earlier Supersport race.
Further down the order there was a three way battle between Chris Walker of Motorsport Henderson Yamaha, Gary Mason of Quay Garage and James Ellison of Airwaves Yamaha all battling for seventh.
Walker led and held his own at the front until lap 13 when Mason moved ahead of Walker which he held until lap 28 when Walker revenged. Showing he is nobody to forget about was Ellison who found that extra tactic of attack to finish ahead of both of them to take seventh.
Mason again took first place with the Cup category followed by Martin Jessopp Honda riders Racing and Peter Hickman of Ultimate Racing. A duplicate of the cup standings for race one.
Hardinge Doodson Motorsport Tom Tunstall and Mist Suzuki Matt Bond did not take part in the race most likely due to their crash in the first race. Race two non finishers were Brian McCormack of MAR Racing who crashed Druids mid way through the race and Alastair Fagan of Red Viper Racing.
