Brands BSB: Ellison quickest in opening session

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s James Ellison was the fastest rider during the opening MCE British Superbike free practice session at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, and a 45.698 was more than good enough to go P1 this morning.

The Cumbrian rider was only 0.4s off his own lap record pace at the Kent track, and was one tenths quicker than Buildbase BMW’s Richard Cooper. The diminutive rider was second fastest in FP1 and did actually lead the pack for a short time, after a 45.869.

Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey completed the top three with a solid 45.887 rotation, followed closely by JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam and Bennetts Suzuki’s Tommy Bridewell, who lapped a 45.937 and 46.015 respectively.

Initially it was Haslam who was the first to put down a quick time with a 46.142 with twenty minutes remaining, and that time saw him climb to the top of the sheets. Then it was Laverty’s turn to go fastest with a 46.113 on the sixteen minute mark.

Oulton race-two winner, Cooper topped the sheets five minutes later with a 45.869 rotation. But lap record holder, Ellison was not holding back and put down a 45.698 with a handful of minutes remaining, and at the top of the timing-screens is where he remained as the chequered flag appeared.

Iddon, O’Halloran, Laverty, Smrz, Kiyonari and Byrne rounded up the top eleven, with the Be Wiser Ducati multiple champ only completing a total of 28 laps, and did remain in his garage for the majority of the opening outing.

There were a few fallers out on track, including FS-3 Racing’s Billy McConnell who fell unhurt at Clark Curve. Smiths Racing’s Howie Mainwaring fell at Paddock Hill Bend and even though he was declared OK at the trackside the red flags came out, and the session came to a halt for a short time. Martin Jessopp was missing from today’s proceedings as he is recovering from injury.
