Brands BSB: ‘It is tough to take second’ – Byrne

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne has admitted that he found it ‘tough’ watching Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes take the MCE British Superbike title at a wet Brands Hatch circuit this afternoon, but was full of praise for his young rival.

The triple champ was on course to clinch an historic and record breaking fourth title, but he was eventually overtaken by Lowes in an epic battle that lasted for the majority in the final race, with the 23-year-old finishing second to Byrne’s third place.

But the Lambeth born rider is not feeling too glum as he has had a fantastic year, and still has the love for the job, and could not have tried any harder than he had this year.

“I am not too down as I have had a fantastic year, and a couple of things have happened throughout the year that has really made me love my job,” said Byrne, speaking at the track.

“Personally for me I am a bit sad for the crowd because if we had a dry track this weekend I think the racing could have been as good as it has been in previous rounds, and to have the championship decided in sketchy conditions is rather tough, but I can put my hand on my heart and say that I gave it my absolute all.

“I tried to go with Alex, and I pushed a little bit too much going into Druids and lost the front and managed to stay on the bike, but it was tough riding around and seeing the championship that I won last year go to someone else, but he is a worthy winner. It is kind of tough to take second but I gave it my all and I am happy.”
