Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes has a three point advantage going into the final two MCE British Superbike races of the day at Brands Hatch tomorrow, but the youngster is not taking his marginal lead for granted and has hailed the championship as ‘level pegging’ going into Sunday.
Lowes got the better of rival Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne to snatch second on the podium, demoting the triple champ to third. With the points advantage Lowes can go into the double header tomorrow with some confidence, especially as he starts race two from pole.
The Lincolnshire lad was another rider who did not enjoy the wet track conditions, but as the circuit continued to dry and the rain stopped for a short time, Lowes felt more confident on the Honda, after having some ‘moments’ on his bike in the first half of the race. On the penultimate lap Lowes closed the gap on leader and eventual race winner, Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Brookes, and praised the Aussie’s performance out on track today.
“I know how hard it is to lead in those conditions, and Josh had a good pace in the start. After qualifying I was feeling a bit worried, and at the start of the race I had some pretty big slides and when the track started to dry up the bike worked a lot better and the speed was good,” said Lowes, speaking at the track.
“It was a little bit hard to enjoy that race so when I was sat behind Shakey I had a couple of slides and I thought if I crash and give the championship to him then I would be upset. It is basically level pegging going into tomorrow, but it is nice to go into the last day with a chance and this time tomorrow night I will either be crying or smiling. Pole is always nice and it is good to be in that position and be there or there a bouts, and take advantage of that.”
