Brands BSB: Mackenzie exceeds expectations with Friday finish

Tarran Mackenzie has admitted finishing third fastest today was more than he had predicted heading into the sixth round of the year.

The McAMS Yamaha rider clocked a time in this morning’s dry first practice session which was just 0.357s off leader Glenn Irwin, and less than a quarter of a second off team-mate Josh Brookes.

But after chalking up a 13th and 11th at his ‘home’ round of Knockhill just a fortnight ago, Taz says it was a bit of a relief to be that high up the order.

And although he heads into the rest of the weekend, which looks to be forecast as dry, with a bit more confidence, he admitted both he and the factory Yamaha squad still have work to do.

“I only did FP1 this morning because it was wet this afternoon, but third in that is more than I expected, so I was really happy with that,” he told Bikesport News.

“I could’ve gone out if I wanted to but it was sort of partly my choice and partly the team’s. We wouldn’t have been learning anything really and there’s a risk attached to it.

“If it was qualifying then we would’ve gone out, but with the rest of the weekend is meant to be dry we just thought we’d sit it out and play it safe. There’s still a bit to go with myself and the bike but I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

The younger Mackenzie brother says his success at the track in previous years could bode well for him this weekend, as could the 20th anniversary Yamaha livery he and Brookes are running on race day.

“I’ve gone good here in the past in Stock 6, Motostar and Supersport so I do like it here. And I reckon there’s an extra few tenths in the paintjob for Sunday.”
