Brands BSB: Richards bags ninth Supersport pole of the year

Smiths Triumph’s Glen Richards continued his season-long domination of qualifying by clinching his ninth and final Motorpoint British Supersport pole at Brands Hatch this morning, just 0.026 of a second ahead of team-mate Billy McConnell.

The Championship leader set the early pace in the chilly conditions at Brands Hatch but quickly was enthralled in a battle for pole with fellow Adelaide man McConnell.

The duo went quicker and quicker with McConnell leading the session with three minutes to go before Richards went under Alastair Seeley’s lap record with a laptime of 1’27.999.

TAG Triumph’s Christian Iddon continued the good form he has had of late to go ahead of Championship contender Jack Kennedy and into third on the grid with under two minutes of the session remaining, piping the Dubliner by just over a tenth of a second.

Graeme Gowland looked imminent to push Kennedy back on to the second row but was left 0.056 of a second shy of a front row start, leaving the former Spanish Supersport Champion to head the second row. Glenn Irwin will start the first of two Supersport races from sixth ahead of Richard Cooper, who crashed out at Graeme Hill Bend, and Luke Jones.

Gearlink Kawasaki’s Ben Wilson dropped down to ninth after crashing out at Sterlings half way through the session, with Taylor Mackenzie sandwiched between the two Appleyard Macadam riders, Nikki Coates and Deane Brown, on the back of the third row.
