Repli-Cast Honda 125GP rider Robbie Stewart has been ruled out for the season after breaking his seventh and eighth vertebrae during a crash in the Relentless-backed series at Croft last weekend.
Scotsman Stewart fell with only one lap to go and careered head-first into the safety barrier. After getting up immediately, Stewart then developed pain in his neck so was taken to the circuit medical centre were staff were shocked to discover the extent of his injuries. He was then rushed to Middlesborough Hospital.
"Following a front-row start and a fantastic race, for this to happen with only one lap left to go makes the situation feel even worse for Robbie as he knew the race was his and the first place was on the cards," said team manager Gary Dawson.
"On a good note Robbie is in high spirits in Middlesbrough Hospital and with no permanent damage he has been fitted with a body cast which he will need to keep on for six to eight weeks but unfortunately he will be out of racing for the rest of this season.
"Robbie and all the team would like to thank all the medical staff at Croft Circuit as well as the marshals and the Chris Jones Riders' Fund for supplying the X-ray unit. We also would like to thank all our sponsors and friends for their kind support and comments.
"We would like to assure you Robbie will be back with the team testing the new 600 superstock bike as soon as his injuries heal and he will be ready for the assault on next year's 600 championship."
