Glenn Irwin topped the final Bennetts British Superbike Championship free practice session at Brands Hatch on Saturday morning, the Honda Racing rider posting a lap of 1’25’455 which put him ahead of brother Andrew on the Synetiq BMW and Joe Francis (FHO Racing BMW).
The session started dry but riders were greeted with cloudy skies for the short, 20-minute session and the first flying lap saw Josh Brookes (VisionTrack Ducati) go quickest with a 1’27.103 which put him a tenth ahead of the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki of Rory Skinner.
Drops of rain were then reported in sector three but Brookes was the first to dip into the 1’26’s although he was quickly upstaged by Skinner who edged him out by 0.099s with Peter Hickman moving up to third on the FHO Racing BMW.
Next time around and Brookes upped the pace to 1’26.332 as the rain drops disappeared in sector three and Kyle Ryde jumped up to second, 0.153s adrift of the Australian.
The top six riders were all now in the 1’26 bracket although times were still more than a second slower than the pace set by Jason O’Halloran on Friday.
Mid-way through the session, Ryde went quickest with a 1’26.219 on the Rich Energy OMG Racing BMW despite rain now being reported in sector one and the running order was now Ryde, Brookes, Hickman, Bradley Ray, Danny Buchan and Skinner.
Ryde then went ever so slightly quicker after lapping at 1’26.201 which gave him a 0.086s advantage over Brookes with Hickman but Title Fighters Tarran Mackenzie and Tommy Bridewell remained in the pits after completing just a single exploration lap.
Christian Iddon moved up to fourth in the closing stages with just a tenth covering the top four riders and the Ducati rider then went quickest, his time of 1’26.198s putting him just 0.003s quicker than Ryde.
However, he didn’t stay there long with Francis becoming the first rider to lap below 1’26, his lap of 1’25.713s putting him on top of the leaderboard with Andrew Irwin now in second.
The flurry of late action continued with Glenn Irwin then going quickest at 1’25.475 which was quicker than what he’d managed on Friday, and his final lap saw him shave a bit more off his time, his eventual quickest lap being 1’25.455.
Brother Andrew was just 0.033s adrift with Francis holding onto third ahead of Hickman, Brookes and Lee Jackson, all six dipping below 1’26.
O’Halloran, Iddon, Ryde and Buchan completed the top 10.
