Your final round up of stats, facts and pub ammo talking points ahead of the Brands Hatch 2021 Bennetts BSB Championship clincher.
The Brands Hatch GP circuit has hosted at least one round of the BSB Championship every year since 1996 with the exception of 1996 and 2000 when both rounds took place on the shorter, Indy circuit.
That equates to a total of 80 BSB races – in that time there have been 25 different race winners and 46 different podium finishers.
Just 21 points cover the leading four riders in the Championship – Tarran Mackenzie, Jason O’Halloran, Christian Iddon and Tommy Bridewell – which is the closest gap ever between the top four riders going into the final round of the Showdown.
Tarran Mackenzie is aiming to follow in the footsteps of his father Niall in becoming British Superbike Champion – if this were to happen, they would be the first father/son combination to be BSB champion.
If Jason O’Halloran were to become BSB Champion, he would be the third Australian to achieve the feat after Troy Bayliss (1999) and Josh Brookes (2015 & 2020).
Four of the six title challengers – Tarran Mackenzie, Jason O’Halloran, Christian Iddon and Peter Hickman – have previously won BSB races on the Brands Hatch GP circuit, O’Halloran with two wins and the rest with one. Tommy Bridewell and Danny Buchan have yet to take a BSB win at the circuit.
Bridewell has, however, scored more podiums (10) on the Brands Hatch GP circuit than the rest of his title challengers, Iddon and O’Halloran both having eight, Mackenzie (6) and Hickman (2).
Danny Buchan’s best BSB finish on the Brands Hatch GP circuit is fourth, which he’s achieved on five occasions including three times earlier this year.
In six of the last seven years, the rider leading the championship coming into the final round has been crowned champion.
McAMS Yamaha are aiming to become just the fifth team to finish first and second in the Championship following in the footsteps of Cadbury’s Boost Yamaha (1996 and 1997), HM Plant Honda (2007 and 2010), GSE Airwaves Yamaha (2009) and PBM Ducati (2019).
Tommy Bridewell will make his 325th BSB start in the second race at Brands Hatch this weekend.
Josh Brookes will make his 300th BSB start in the first race at Brands Hatch this weekend.
This makes Brookes just the sixth rider to achieve 300 starts behind Michael Rutter (434), Peter Hickman (369), Shane Byrne (356), Tommy Bridewell (323) and Chris Walker (304).
Bradley Ray will make his 125th BSB start in the first race this weekend.
Storm Stacey is set to make his 50th BSB start in the second race this weekend.
Shane Byrne and Josh Brookes have the record number of wins on the GP circuit with 19 followed by John Reynolds (5), Leon Haslam (4) and Steve Hislop, Gregorio Lavilla and Leon Camier (all 3).
Josh Brookes has won more races on the Brands GP circuit (19) than he has at any other UK circuit. Thruxton is his next most successful circuit with nine wins.
In 2012, Shane Byrne won all five races held on the GP circuit, a feat matched by Josh Brookes in 2019.
Josh Brookes has won all three races to be held at the final round at Brands Hatch on two occasions – 2013 and 2019.
Shane Byrne has the most number of podiums (30) on the Brands GP circuit followed by Josh Brookes (26), James Ellison (14), Leon Haslam (11), Tommy Bridewell (10), John Reynolds and Michael Rutter (both 9) and Christian Iddon and Jason O’Halloran (both 8)
Tommy Bridewell finished on the podium in all five of the BSB races to be held on the Brands GP circuit in 2019.
Gino Rea’s two victories last time out at Donington Park made him the 55th rider to win a BSB race. He also became the 81st rider to stand on a BSB podium.
Bjorn Estment (11th), Naomichi Uramoto (13th) Josh Owens (14th) and Brian McCormack (15th) all took their best ever BSB finishes at the last round at Donington Park.
For Uramoto and McCormack, it was their first ever BSB points although McCormack did score points in the 2007 BSB Privateer’s Cup.
The current lap record around the Brands Hatch GP circuit was set in July in 2017 by Josh Brookes, the Australian recording a time of 1m24.873s, 103.21mph.
