HM Plant Honda's Cal Crutchlow has taken the British Superbike pole position at Oulton Park this afternoon just three-tenths of a second in front of runaway series leader Shane Byrne.
Crutchlow and Rizla Suzuki's Tom Sykes battled for the number one spot for most of the session and Byrne made a late charge on his Airwaves Ducati to push Sykes to third. Leon Haslam round out the front row on the other HM Plant Honda.
“I was baulked a bit on one lap and it was very windy out there, a bit dodgy in places, so it might have been faster, but it is good to be back on top. Now I hope to turn this into two race wins – I’ve got to go for it here, it’s my favourite circuit so really there is nothing else but achieving that," said Crutchlow.
Karl Harris, who didn't go out in this morning's rain-interrupted third free practice, took fifth on the Rob Mac Racing Yamaha with Jentin Yamaha's Simon Andrews in an outstanding sixth. Michael Rutter and James Ellison, who is using a new electronics package on his bike this weekend, finished the top eight.
Airwaves Ducati's Leon Camier will have a battle on his hands come race day after crashing out at after only five laps shockingly putting him 29th on the grid. Camier got up and walked away, but after suffering a bang to the head is being checked over by circuit medical staff.
Billy McConnell of MSS Kawasaki settled for tenth after a crash with only two minutes to go and the still injured Leon Morris managed half a lap before the Team Brookspeed Ducati 1098R suffered an electrical fault that was unable to be fixed by the end of the session.
Scott Smart was second Kawasaki home in 11th.
Gary Mason of Quay Honda was the first Cup rider in 12th position ahead of John Laverty of NW200 Buildbase Ducati in 15th and Riders Racing Martin Jessopp finishing the top three in 20th.
