Colin Appleyard, a giant of the MCE British Superbike paddock, sadly passed away yesterday afternoon.
A typical Yorkshireman, Mr Appleyard was a great lover and supporter of motorcycle racing and in many ways the father of the British Superbike paddock with his humour and viewpoint of which everyone took note.
Mr Appleyard established his motorcycle racing team over two decades ago, to back and support his son Robin who was the dominant force of the 125GP class, winning the British title in the colours of his father’s team on seven occasions and the gracing the world stage.
Robin retired from the competing but Colin maintain the family link with racing, continuing to back his team with the aim of focusing on young British talent ,bringing forward the stars of tomorrow. That is the case at the present with the team, continuing under the guidance of Robin, running a Yamaha for Danny Webb in the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship.
Mr Appleyard was one of those people who always had time for everyone – he enjoyed discussing his sport, had strong opinions and didn’t take fools lightly but he was one of the most respected of team principals and a gentleman who will be sorely missed. He was still taking a keen interest in both the quarterly reports on his thriving business empire but also worrying if Harry Hartley would be fit to ride his team’s second bike at Knockhill until he died with his wife at his bedside, along with Robin and his sister Judith.
