With a characteristically large bank holiday crowd expecting some of the closest and most hard fought racing of the season, Cadwell Park witnessed the MSS Discovery team pulling as one to make good on the promise from previous rounds.
The first race saw the team’s tyre woes repeated once more as the racing slick spun on Easton’s rear rim by nearly 250mm inducing a dangerous degree of “chatter”. Wisely the Scot, still recovering from his Snetterton injury, decided to pull out in the early stages rather than risk an unnecessary and painful crash which would only lengthen the recovery process.
McConnell, as is his style, got stuck in and hovered close to the top ten all race finishing in the points in twelfth place ready for the second race of the afternoon.
“It was not easy seeing Stuart cruise into the pits after such a short outing, but I would rather that than a pile of scrap somewhere on the circuit and an injured rider getting a lift back to his motor home”, declared team principal, Nick Morgan.
For race two, both riders achieved a strong start with McConnell making the best use of the 2.1 mile Lincolnshire track passing Harris and then catching Watanabe and Laverty and was looking set for a strong top ten finish.
“I was really getting into the groove and then, as I was braking for the hairpin, the back wheel came off the ground and stopped spinning for a second. That was all it took for me to accidentally knock it out of gear and freewheel onto the grass and out of the race”, commented and obviously frustrated McConnell.
Stuart Easton was determined to make good on his first race failure and was gritting his teeth in pain as the grid formed. Although in increasing agony, the Hawick based rider clung on until the bitter end and finished in a creditable fourteenth place while suffering considerable pain.
“What can you say other than the lads tried their best for Joe and Joanna public today”, said a stoic Nick Morgan after the event. “Billy is proving to be a really tenacious and brave rider which the public love. And Stuart is coming to terms with the fact that 90% fit is simply not fit enough”.
“What a brave guy though, he said that in the second race he was hanging on to the bike like as limply as a second hand track suit and I know what he means. He did no damage and will be even fitter for the next round, so let’s see what the boys can do at Croft."
