Cadwell BSB: McConnell out paces Wilson to take Supersport win

Smith Triumph’s rider Billy McConnell had to battle hard for the Motorpoint British Supersport win, as he had to fight till the end with race one winner Gearlink Kawasaki’s Ben Wilson.

In a repeat of the first Supersport race Wilson managed to pull ahead on the opening lap to take the lead, with team-mate Alastair Seeley in hot pursuit. McConnell on lap two decided to make his mark and made a move on Mar-Train’s Stuart Easton at the Hairpin to go third on lap five.

Seeley was the Aussie’s next target and a lap later overtook the Carrickfergus rider at the Gooseneck to go second and even though Wilson had a two second advantage McConnell closed the gap on the Kawasaki and on lap thirteen the Triumph rider decided to make a move at Coppice but it didn’t stick. But on Chris Curve McConnell made a move which stuck, propelling him into the lead for the first time in the race. But behind them were Easton and Samsung Honda’s Jason O’Halloran.

On the final lap the race really was on, with two battles breaking out at the sharp end. Wilson tried to get the better of McConnell but could not pass him, then one second behind O’Halloran and Mar-Train’s Stuart Easton were locked together, with the Australian nearly falling after clipping the curb at the bottom of the mountain, but he was able to compose himself to take the third step on the podium, with Easton in fourth.

Appleyard Macadam Doodson rider Graeme Gowland rounded off the top five, and held off the challenges from Oxford Tag Triumph’s Richard Cooper and Smith Triumph’s Glen Richards.

Crocked rider Seeley was still suffering from a broken rib, after crashing in yesterday’s race and even though he was able to be competitive in the first few laps he could not sustain the race pace of his team-mate and slowly fell back in the pack and ended the race in eighth, with Appleyard Macadam rider Deane Brown and Seton Tuning Yamaha’s Danny Buchan rounding off the top ten.

There were a few fallers during the final Supersport race of the day. Mar-Train rider Glenn Irwin did not have the best weekends, after he crashed at Charlies. Minutes later Oxford Tag Triumph’s Shaun Winfield fell at Mansfield, but was unhurt.
