DONINGTON BSB: BYRNE UNTOUCHABLE IN QUALIFYING

Shane Byrne has stunned the British Superbike field in a wet qualifying session at Donington Park this afternoon by going more than one second faster than anyone else.
Only Hydrex Honda's James Ellison could get close to the Airwaves Ducati man with rainmaster Michael Rutter in third and Cal Crutchlow in fourth.
Hawk Kawasaki's Scott Smart eventually took sixth place in front of Leon Haslam and Leon Camier, but was just beaten to fifth in the dying seconds by Relentless Suzuki's Michael Laverty. Smart had been as high as third.
Rutter was first out of the blocks with a quick time, posting 1'54.555 which stood until MSS Kawasaki's Billy McConnell cam up with a surprising 1'52.943. Rutter then took back his first place with a 1'51.497.
The pair exchanged times and it looked like Aussie McConnell had don enough with a 1'49.665 just before the half-way point but Shane Byrne had something to say about it. Byrne put in a 1'48.749 and followed it with a 1'48.453 minutes later.
Meanwhile, Leon Haslam was struggling down in 13th place and both Harris and Ellison had crashed along with McConnell. Ellison got back on the bike, kicked it straight in the pits and banged in his second placed lap.
Rutter went fastest with a 1'48.101 with eight minutes to go and then Byrne began his devastating run of laps, firstly with a 1'47.448 and then a 1'46.639 to clinch pole.
