Donington BSB: Cooper wins incident packed race

Buildbase BMW's Richard Cooper extended his championship lead in the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship at Donington Park with a win as his closest threat Danny Buchan of MSS Kawasaki crashed out on the first lap.

Leading into the first corner was Howie Mainwairing ahead of GBMoto's Tristian Palmer and Adam Jenkinson of Padgett's Honda as Cooper had a disappointing start from his pole position.

Jenkinson moved up to second, but as Palmer tried to regain the position he became out of shape on the entry to the Melbourne Loop, luckily Jenkinson saw him and both were able to take avoiding action. Palmer regained second position. As they got to Goddards Jenkinson went wide and Danny Buchan of MSS Colchester Kawasaki frustratingly crashed out of the race.

Not long after there was an incident at the Melbourne Loop between two riders, both riders managed to walk off the track to safety but one rider did need medical attention at the side of the track bringing the safety car out.

As the race restarted Mainwairing immediately opened up the throttle, he looked to get a bit out of shape as he entered Goddards but was able to regain control. Cooper who had now worked his way up a few places took second to then swap the lead with Mainwairing a couple of times.

Jenkinson who fell back down to fifth behind Blackhorse Kawsasaki's Victor Cox had worked his way back fourth to start putting pressure on Palmer. There were a couple more incidents at Melbourne loop and Starkeys which caused the safety car to come out for the second time.

Lap 13 saw the race get back underway. As they were about to start the final lap Mainwairing lost the front going into Goddards and crashed, Jenkinson followed him into the grass with his bike just clipping Mainwairing as he was up on his feet trying to rejoin, fortunately both riders looked unhurt. Meanwhile Cooper set the fastest lap of the race, Cox got second followed by Luke Quigley of Formwise/Astro Racing.

Palmer who lost some time trying to avoid Mainwairing had to settle for sixth overall behind David Johnson of Carbontek Racing who grabbed fourth and newcomer C N Racing's Taylor Knapp both picking up their best result of the season.
