Gearlink Kawasaki’s Chris Martin is battling through injury this Bank Holiday weekend at Donington Park aiming to gain any points towards his championship chase for the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport title.
The rider was involved in an incident at Oulton Park, in which he broke his ankle in addition to suffering ligament damage to his left shoulder bringing his weekend to an abrupt end. After progressively creeping up the order throughout the weekend the North Newbald rider qualified eighth in the first qualifying session on Sunday.
Martin has had a screw placed in his ankle, which has caused some swelling due to the body adapting, but he has been cleared to ride. The ankle causes fewer problems on the bike than when he is walking. He is currently using a crutch for extra support, but both ankle and shoulder are mending well.
Martin said: “I am just doing a few laps each session this weekend, I am taking it easy as Monday is the important day. I just need to get some points, they all count towards the championship, even if I only get two."
"I am hoping to get into the top 15 and confident I will be back on full form for Snetterton, if not maybe even Thruxton. The team is brilliant and the bike is a lot better this year, last season we struggled with the bottom end, but now we have that. We are more competitive this season and that is why it is vital to get any points.”
